A Sansom Park police officer is in critical condition after she was shot during active shooter training at an elementary school in Forest Hill on Saturday afternoon, according to officials from Everman.
Craig Spencer, chief of public safety for the city of Everman, said the officer was shot around 2:10 p.m. Saturday in a “training accident,” according to KTVT-TV.
Everman police were not involved in the training and are only taking part in the release of information because they are neighbors to Forest Hill police.
The officer was shot with a live round and then taken by ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, according to Spencer. Her identity has not been released at this time.
A third-party training provider organized and provided the supplies for the training at David K. Sellars Elementary School in Forest Hill, Spencer said, and several other agencies were participating in the training.
The Texas Rangers and Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the shooting.
Spencer said that there wasn’t supposed to be live fire training and how the officer was shot with a live round will be part of the investigation.
The name of the third-party company is not being released because there is an ongoing criminal investigation into the shooting, police said.
“I can confirm that we don’t ever use live ammunition in any sort of exercise,” Spencer said at a press conference, according to WFAA-TV. “That’s not common for law enforcement.”
“This is a truly tragic situation,” he said.
